Just finished the rifle up. It has a .40 "A" weight barrel made by Rice. The lock is a Chambers gunmakers lock and I made new triggers for the Davis trigger plate. The stock is persimmon and all the hardware was made by me.

very nice Brian, really like the patch box.  Persimmon is really beautiful wood.  i have a persimmon blank I am looking forward to working with later this year on an iron mount rifle.  How did it work and how did you finish it?

Persimmon is hard like good sugar maple but is kind of chippy. It doesn't chip like some of the black walnut you get now but it will chip quicker than maple. It really takes a good powerful drill motor to drill the ram rod hole. The ram rod hole was the worse thing about the persimmon to me. I finished this one with Kibler's iron nitrate stain with Pilkington stock oil with black pigment in it to get the dark finish.

The patch box was inspired by a Jacob Gross patch box I seen on Art's blog page.

Great finish on the stock. Would like to do something similar on my 1st build from a maple stock blank. Could you offer up some more details on the basic finishing process - such as material sources, amounts used, mixtures, etc. I realize this is an adjust as you go process

Maurice, save a piece of your stock when you saw out the profile to experiment with. I usually use nitric acid stain but I bought some of Kibler's ferric nitrate and it works well also. I use a sealer then add the oil finish with black pigment. My black pigment is soot from burning old engine oil. I put a drop of oil on my finger and rub it in the soot. You know you have enough if the oil looks black on the stock. I put a rather thick coat of this on and then rub it back so it will dry. You don't want to leave it thick or it won't dry for you. If it's not as dark as you would like after it dries add pigment to the next coat also. This kind of finish is something you will have to play around with and each piece of wood takes the same finish different. If you have a piece of scrap to play with it will keep you from making a mistake on your rifle finish. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the process details. I do have plenty of scrap to experiment on. Never would have guessed the source of your black pigment in a million years. May even try soot from my coal stove.
