Couple flintlock build ???
« on: December 05, 2018, 03:29:30 AM »
I do not want to be a pest but need some professional advice. I want to build a flintlock and have built one before. If I remember correctly the bottom of the pan fell about. 1/16 in below the bottom edge of the side flat,, not good. Im not gling to tackle a  build from a plank. So if i use a precarved but non inletted stock I should be able to  solve this problem. Correct?   How would I locate (measure) to get the. L I ck positioned verticall correct ? I also do not want to have th flash hole liner end up to high on thd side flat. Do you just locate the lock bolster a smidge above centr of the flat?
 Thanks

You have some freedom of movement as long as the lock mortise is not already done AND you don’t oversize the lock plate. I like to put the touch hole at or just below (by a smiddgen) center of the side flat. I like the bottom of the touch hole level with the top of the pan. Just me talking!

Mark where you want the hole, but don't drill it.  I make a punch mark.   Take the parts off the lockplate and lay it where you want it relative to the mark..   Then inlet the bolster and draw around the plate.  I like the hole centered on the flat and level with the edge of the plate.  Drill the hole last.  Go slow and watch that the plate doesn't drift as it sinks.  If all goes well, the bottom of the pan will be above the bottom corner of the flat.  Because the lock is  centered on the flat it may be higher than  you want.  The edge of the channel can be tapered forward  along the foreend to expose more of the flat and no one will ever see it. That is my way.

I lightly scribe only  a vertical line on the bbl  for centering the pan  and when I'm satisfied w/ the lock position, a horizontal line is scribed later on. Usually on  the Bucks County LRs, the lock is inletted high  and I use a 1/4 dia liner because it'll fit in the bbl flat of  the high mounted lock.  The pic shows the high mounted lock. The actual TH is centered w/ the pan and is even w/ the top of the pan.
I do the same w/ the Lancasters but have more leeway because of a larger bbl . The lock is inletted not quite so high.....Fred

I thought you were going to say "Should I build one for my wife or girlfriend to shoot?"   I say NO.  Unless she expresses interest in what you are doing ......
