Kiblers in Alaska
« on: December 16, 2018, 10:04:56 AM »

Here are four of the five finished rifles on display at the Baptist Mission along the shore of the Gulf of AK. Thanks does not begin to say how much the help of some of the members of this site has meant to us. The encouragement and the gifts have just been off the chart. When the weather breaks we will have a little shooting match by the sea.

That is so cool! Each rifle shows it's own character based on the builders interpretations! Since the Gulf is on the southern shores of Alaska, I'd say these rifles definitely qualify as a "Southern!"  ;) Great project and great job inspiring the next generation!

There is only one thing negative that I see and that is having a rifle on display at full cock with the frizzen closed.

A worthy project! I ain't knocking anybody but the darker guns need to be lighter and the lighter guns need to be darker. The dark ones would benefit from a rub down with a scotchbrite pad lubed with finish. But that's just me. ;)

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

That was a nifty thing to do, getting all those young people interested in our sport/hobby.

As Mike says, th ecolors need to be adjusted a bit, but that isn't a huge thing - they all work, and they all look beautiful!

Ron: I simply can’t belive your generosity.  I had actually been trying to come up with something for them to use . I have admired your horns and will send you some cool pictures of them in action up here.   Kodiak Baptist Mission.   1944 East Rezanof Drive. Kodiak, AK. 99615.     Attn: John Walker. Director .  The kids heads will just explode when they see those horns.

Mike: 100% right about the colors.  The kids picked them.  One of them is black as a coal mine.  I’m just glad no one wanted pink. The truth is I would bet the quality of finish is about what a lot of the original mountain rifles left the hillside shops  with.  It’s hard for us who have done this lots of times and have a high level of expectation to put ourselves in the shoes of folks who have no previous experience with hardly any tools or finishing type work. I can’t brag on these Kibler kits enough. They made it possible for our parent/child teams to leave with a safe, well made, if if roughly finished and strange colored rifles. Those blacktail deer better watch out next season.

What a great way to involve youth and adults in this wonderful project! I can only imagine there are some fun days of shooting and hunting ahead!  Best wishes...
