North Carolina Horn W/Applied Tip

 This one is after a horn shown on page 291 of Bill Ivey's North Carolina Schools Of Longrifles 1765-1865.
 It is about 11 1/2" around the outside curve, tip-to-tip it is about 9 1/4. The from the Pic in the book it looks like the butt has a course grain so I used Ash, it is about 2" and held in by eight wooden pegs. The tip is also Cow horn and held by three wooden pegs. It has a double twist. It was dyed in a batch of old dyes and finished with Brown shoe polish.

We wish you were also. Maybe you can make it one day. With all the advertising and publicity I'm hoping there will a crowd coming through the door to buy some of the vendors wares.

Fascinating horn Renaissance Man.  Is the recessed band for the strap?  Very cool.

Marc, That would be my understanding. Even on the original it looks like the strap would come off at a strange angle.

I guess you put a brass ring in the strap right near the horn for swiveling.  In any event, cool work!

Beautiful craftsmanship.   How did you manage to get that amazing color?  I love the color of the tip too.  Again,  beautiful.

Very nice Tim. Is it a screw tip? I could not tell. Very unusual color but I like it,might be  better as it ages and fades.

 No it is not, the tip is held by Three wooden pegs.
