THOMPSON CENTER HAWKEN STOCKS
« on: January 20, 2019, 10:30:56 PM »
Did TC use a different stock for it's flinters than the percussions, or are they interchangeable? I have a 50 cal perc stock and I'm thinking of making it into a flintlock.

IIRC, thinking back to the 70's, they appeared identical to me.

It should convert fine. I bought what I think they called a White Mountain carbine in the early 90’s. It shot poorly and I junked the barrel and put on a GM 32 inch patched RB “drop-in” barrel and replaced the cap lock with a  flinter from T/C. It all fit together just fine and shot real well.
I still have it around here somewhere. — Bob

Thanks all for the input.  Maybe I'll try it if I can find the parts.

I've actually done this with parts I had.  Acquired a nice Hawkin stock with all the hardware, had a flintlock, and located a penn. hunter barrel that looked unfired..  It's now a complete gun, the flintlock dropped right in to the mortise from the percussion lock.  I guess it's a frankengun but it looks nice.

I used a percussion TC stock to make a flintlock with an L&R RPL lock, it was a long difficult journey.

What was so difficult with the journey?

The TC locks changed somewhat over time.  The lock plates are not all the same size from the early models to the later models.  None of the L&R RPL replacement locks are "drop in" replacements at any rate.  So depending on what lock plate your TC lock has, it can be fairly simple or it can take a lot of gap filling and inlet work to make it fit and look presentable.

My wife's Seneca getting a new lock, hammer, GM  barrel & breech. The L&R Hawken lock was the best fit- only a little grinding to make it fit the mortise.  Not sure how the "TC Hawkens" lock fits.

My daughter trying it out.
