Just a regular square-notched, flat topped open rear and a hooded post front.

I have been using a wide silver blade and a broad square notch for everything. Can't see anything else except a scope. :o

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Third pic is rear of sight, hollowed out to a knife edge,,, Fourth pic is front sight made of bone. I built this .32 skwerl killer in '81, cant see the @!*% sights any more, shot gun works tho!!!...Ed

The sights are iron, higher than I like but work fine for my eyes.  It's a little difficult to see them in detail although the front is painted white.

Daryl i actually used your pictures to model my rear sight ,i can see the sights fine now but not the target so much unless i have the sun to my back but the bulls eye  is blurry . Have not tried to hunt with the new sight yet but when i aim up into a tree i can pick out knots and such fairly good so they may work on game.

I’m in the v notch crowd. Square notch sights involve too much  balancing of light on the sides, and keeping things even on the top. My grandad killed a trainload of squirrels with fine v notch, and barleycorn sights. He taught me to use them, and they just feel right. And, they look right on a longrifle.

"I have been using a wide silver blade and a broad square notch for everything. Can't see anything else except a scope. "

Good Mr. Brooks.  I have to agree with you completely on this one.  Too many years of shooting modern target-sighted handguns for me I guess.  A nice bold square top front sight with a flat topped rear with a wide square notch.  Easy to align and easy to gauge elevation.

I have found that peep sights work wonderfully for me, and I will have some installed on the muzzleloaders when my eyes dictate it's time.  I think a peep secured by the tang bolt would be a good location.

Best wishes and God Bless,   Marc

I have made provision on my rifle for a rear peep sight.  It is just enough to see over the top of the normal rear sight, held with screws, bit of room for windage.  When it is not on the barrel, I have blank screws to fill the holes, so as to not be TOO terribly un-PC.

But, might also emulate Mike, and put a freaking scope on it!  THAT would be a treat to see!  Might do it just because I can.  What do ya think, Mr. Brooks?  Weaver K-6?

I always used a semi wide front sight with a square notch rear sight. Many squirrels and deer fell to this combo. Now that I can't see well enough to hit with this sight I use peep sights and I seem to do better with a .100" wide front blade. I have posted plenty of photos of my simple peep, this is a photo of my front sight. Field work will tell you how big to drill the hole in the peep. Too small and you can't see well and it robs daylight.
About 10 years ago I made a base that mounted on a swamped barrel. I hunted with an aimpoint  red dot for  a few weeks. It ruined  the balance and looked terrible so I took it off.

The front sight is steel w/ a silver insert soldered in and the blade  is .100 wide. The rear sight is flat  topped w/ a notch that has plenty of "daylight" on both sides.....Fred
