How Do You or Do You Clean Diamond Sharpening Plates
« on: February 06, 2019, 03:38:23 PM »
I searched the net and found a couple ideas, this one uses a Pencil eraser:

I thought that a little strange.

Another uses Balistol but the procedure looked to me like it was making the dust finer and forcing it into the plate. I my thoughts making it smoother.

Anybody have any other ways they use?

I've seen John schippers use windex glass cleaner.  On the smoother ones I also use Ballistol.

Tim,
I have been using diamond stones for sharpening for over thirty years.  An eraser made of real rubber works good for diamond stones.    I use 409 household cleaner for cleaning ceramic stones.  My stones are just as good as when I got them.  I use the stones dry, no oil, no water.  When It is time to clean  the ceramic stones  I just give them a squirt of 409 cleaner and dry them off with a paper towel.  Occasionally I will sweep  off the diamond stones with a stiff paint brush while I am sharpening.

Glass cleaner and paper towels or napkins has worked for me. Seems to float the metal then daub with a paper towel instead of wiping.

I use a fingernail brush and Bon-Ami cleanser. Sprinkle a little Bon-Ami on the plate then scrub it with the brush and a little water - rinse -dry & your back in business.

Just tried the eraser, seemed to work pretty good but left a residue behind. So I put some Simple Green on a paper towel wiped it off and dried it, took a couple of passes but the towel started to come off clean. Maybe the eraser loosens things up and the other washes it away? They even feel different, not sure what those big swirls are.
David, you are the one who got me using the Diamond plates some years ago. I had been brushing them off with a shop brush but they were beginning to look a little Gray.

  Thanks to All, Tim

I use my diamond plates to flatten my oil stones. I use a 5 gal bucket 1/2 full of water and just rub one against the other. A little soap or GoJo helps. Diamond comes out clean, oil stones come out flat.

I just rinse mine under the faucet and dry with a paper towel.

I use Windex as a lube when sharpening.  When done, spray again, wipe off with a towel, and out it away for next time.

just about any spray cleaner will do the job. plain old water is actually the best lube when using any diamond plate.

I don't use any Lube on the Diamond stones. Didn't think you needed to.
