Pan polishing

Another question.  I really want to shoot flintlocks now over percussion. I guess I'm changing in my old age. So the new question for me is should I polish the pan to a mirror finish? Is there any advantage other than making the pan easier to keep clean? No faster ignition I assume.

Well it will look pretty but I think that's about it. If it makes you happy thats all that matters.

I usually polish the pan  and underside of the frizzen on my skeet guns as it makes it easier to wipe off the crud that builds up after long strings of shots. I have not found it so important with rifles as I have never been in matches that had more that 40-50 shots in a day. Shooting skeet I may shoot 100-150 rounds in a day. At least back in the good ol' days. :P

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

I've polished both of mine because I didn't know any better.

Like Mike, I polish the pan and the underside of the foot of the frizzen.
Call me crazy, but I also wipe both of those areas, as well as the frizzen face and the rock after loading and before taking my next shot.

I polished one because I was bored.

It didn't help the boredom that much.

Polished mine to a Mirror finish. It really helped when I wanted to Shave or Comb my Hair...

I remove all evidence of the cast surfaces, which includes the pan.

I polish mine to remove all rough surfaces, bottom of frizzen also. Sure makes wiping out the residue much easier.
