Human eye exit pupil VS peep sight diameter
« on: March 24, 2019, 04:11:05 AM »
Any opthalmologists/ optometrists on  ALR?
I am curious if there is an optimum diameter for a peep sight or ghost ring rear sight and the average exit pupil for the human eye?
                      Thanks, R.J.Bruce

No- not DR.
Most people see sights - any sights differently, whether singe front, front and rear, different shapes, sizes, etc as well as
different aperture openings in aperture sights.  As far as I know, there is no mathematical equation that will work for everyone.
You have to experiment - same as working up a load for your gun.  Different people see sights, light, target shapes differently.

Peep sight diameter is going to be dependent of the amount of light, and how close it is to your eye.

Is it true that the eye will center in the peep no matter the size?

The only peep sight I’ve ever shot was as a kid on a B.B. gun...

I would assume that the eye would center itself , unless it was a really
large aperture.

It will center no matter what size it is. As long as you don't look at the peep sight. Look at the front sight.

For any given light source, if the hole needs to be big enough to see the front sight AND the target clearly and sharply.

Clearly and sharply are both VERY important.

Thus, that hole size may vary considerably, from person to person.

For my target rifles I have peep sights with different dia. openings, just depends on the conditions and what I can or can not see.  If they are too small, or light to low, they will be fuzzy.  If it is large enough they will be sharp and clear.

I don't use peeps anymore but when I did I used a ghost sight. My vision is so bad that a smaller hole will blur over. A ghost is not perfect for all conditions but I could always use it and see the front sight. This was for hunting.

I use primitive open sights now. The rear sight, front sight , and target/game are all blurry but I just put all the burs together and make it work.

If anybody needed a scope it's me but that's not going to happen. I just keep getting closer and closer to the game as I got older. I'm pretty close now.

Thanks , that’s what I thought.

I've been shooting peeps since my 20's, putting it simply here's my take on peeps. First the peep itself should be as close to the eye as  possible for best results.
Generally, the smaller the hole you can shoot with the tighter your groups will be. But for hunting a small hole can be a bad choice. A small hole will not let in as much light, can blur your sight picture and blocks out too much of the target animal. The larger holes including the very large Ghost Ring still give you all the accuracy you need for hunting both large and small game.
I start out with a small hole like 1/16" then shoot it at paper and maybe hunt with it. After that I make my final adjustments on the size of the hole.
Normally I have two peep sights made up. One with a small hole for shooting paper, the other with a larger hole for hunting.

I recently purchased this rifle. The peep is a Johnson I believe. Looks good on a muzzle loader. I have verniers on several of my cartridge rifles. I find 1/8” to work pretty well for most hunting and target work.

Unscrew the aperture, re-install the rear sight using all 3 should bring rear and front sight into better focus.

Recurve: that is exactly what I was describing. Lowell Haarer uses them on his own rifles. I am having him put one on the rifle he is building for me.

Mike, I don’t have any issues with this setup. Not sure what your getting at.
