This could probably be fixed by silver soldering the lugs in place, or brazing them in place. ButI still wouldn’t overload it.

My heavens, unless right on top of combustion chamber, 1/8 is fine, that is 125 thousandth. L C Rice told me 100 thousandths was fine on their barrels.

I wouldn’t weld on it because it generates too much heat. It likely would distort the bore, and possibly compromise the metals integrity ( especially on a Douglas’s barrel).

I would not cut the underlugs this deep, but I really don' t think that the barrel is too thin at 1/8 inch of good metal. I would shoot it without worry.

 Welding or silver hard soldering would probably do more harm than good. It surely would warp the barrel. I think it is just fine as is.

If concerned, I'd soft solder the lugs in place.  (well fitted first)

Rich, I been very fortunate to get some good deals over the years, these 2 are the only problem children. Cant knock that too much. I don't have much in them.
Heres athought--- where can I get some pics and info on short barrel Hawken guns? I have seen this info, just cant remember where.
Would a 23" 50cal be too ridiculis for this type of gun?
I'm with most of you all about not using them in the present state,however, if I can do something creative,and within reason ,the rifiling in both is very good to new. Both Douglas mfg.
