vent liners

just wondering a lot of the builders i read here use a liner to start with like the wite lighting etc. do you start with a liner instead of drilling a vent hole to keep from having to do it later from the hole wearing out because the liner is  better then the barrel matareal and the cone in the liner makes a more reliable firring?

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

I have only built one flinter without a vert liner, and it was my first when I was 14 yrs. young.  Let's just say it was a long time ago.

The White Lightning Liners all have a 32 TPI whether they are 1/4", 5/16" or 3/8".  If you already have a 1/4" x 28 liner, you'll need to install a 5/16" as your TPI is different.  So buy the tap and drill with the liner, and have at it.  It's not difficult, but requires careful attention.

I have a slotted liner probably ampco and I want to install a w. lightning. I do not know what size liner is in the gun now. So do I just buy a new liner and retap or is there another solution? Long Carabine

Knowing the size of your current liner is critical, I don't know the make of your rifle but in all the off the shelf guns and all of the other liners on the market that I have seen the thread is courser than a white lightning. If your current liner is 1/4 you need a 5/16th white lightning, if your current is 5/16th you will need a 3/8th white lightning. When you go up to a 3/8th you need to consider the width of the flat of your barrel and the location of your current liner relative to the center of the flat to be sure you have enough barrel flat to meet the full circumference of the liner.

For the white Lightning Liners, you'll probably have to order the drills and taps for what ever size you decide to use. Like Taylor said, the threads per inch are basically rare,32 tpi, unless you go to a machinist tool supply.  ...Geo.
