Pewter nose cap

So I poured my first nose nose cap this weekend and thought id share some things I learned from mistakes if you may be interested. I had plummers putty on hand so I used that in combination with cardstock and masking tape to form up the project. When I poured the molten pewter it blew through the plummers putty and I had to re pour three times to fill the casting. That left me with a void in my nose cap after I dressed it down. After I recovered from the brief anxiety and thought how to fix my problem I discovered using the 3M metal tape I had on hand. I wished I had used this on the original pour as I probably would have had better success. So this is the reason for my post. Maybe you can find it useful to use this metal tape. It conforms to the stock and is sturdy. Here are a few photos. Building the form for the void and after it is dressed down a bit.

For small holes you can use a flat tipped soldering gun but you have to keep it moving or you might end up with a larger hole.

I will have to try the tape next time I do one.Last one I did had a couple small divots in the end and I just left them. When someone ask me what they are I tell them they are tooth marks from the last Indian attack!
