I finally called it quits and stained my Fordney project today.   I used home brewed AF with a LMF overcoat.  I'm glad I tested out the AF before I used it, as my test piece turned almost black with a 10:1 dilution.   I ended up diluting it about 40:1 and I still had to rub it back quite a bit around the carving.  Overall I'm happy with how it turned out considering this is just a hobby for me.

Color turned out Great - I LIKE IT.

Carving went well I see!  Looks Fordneyish to me ;)

Bio......I'm not sure how good the color representation is in the photo, but for a good kentucky, it's too light.    You should
have stuck with the 10-1 solution and rubbed it back a little...........Don

Iuse a 20/1 solution of stright nitric and water. It works good for me. Then I stain it with a walnut stain I make my self. turns out the right color and you can rub the stain back to give the desired color. ED

I know from previous experience that even with neutralizing, my home brewed aquafortis darkens within a few days.   The color will also deepen when I get more coats of finish on the stock.   The picture above is with only one thin coat of finish.

I used the 10:1 aquafortis dilution on a test piece from the same stock and it looked like a piece of charcoal even after rubbing it back with 320 grit sandpaper.   

I like a dark color on some stocks, but it seems to me to be a waste to stain a nicely figured stock so dark that you can't see any of the figure.

I won't comment on the color as I know this monitor doesn't show colors correctly,,,
But will say that your carving looks nice!

Very nice looking gun!  Color is great.  Some lamp soot mixed in the finish would highlight the carving and moldings well without covering anything up.  Well done!

That sounds like a good idea.   I might give that a try.   I actually have one little boo boo that I need to hide (long story that I'm too embarrased to admit).

I've seen a couple of Fordney's in person and they were rather light colored just about like yours - of course they could have been refinished, I suppose.
