Dan Several good looking engraved muzzles the swivel and the single .also several nice looking stocks. Were any of the pieces Don's? Is the Montana Gun Collectors asso.still active?

I must say, I really like the patchbox design of John Archer’s East Tennessee rifle. Never seen anything like that before. Was that design characteristic of a particular builder or region?

In the photos here only the FS flint Hawken is Don King

However, Steve brought over The Scarlet Bitch Sunday.

Darned camera did no focus on the inscription very well.
The engraved muzzles are on Bill Madden's Lehigh and my swivel breech..

Thanks for posting, Dan. John's rifle is stocked in persimmon. I don't know the source for his inspiration. Perhaps he will comment here once he gets back to Canada.

Ezra, while pawing through my Fair materials this morning, I stumbled on a handout prepared by John Archer that explains his patchbox design is based on one found on a rifle built by Ian Pratt. Whether Ian's build was his own or inspired by yet another rifle, John doesn't say.

Cable, the Fair is held at my place the second weekend of August.Send me a PM with your contact information and I'll see to it that a copy of next year's Fair Brochure is sent to you.

My apologies to everyone. While John did base his rifle on one built by Ian, he copied the patchbox, with some modification, from one found on an original. I've got to quit relying on memory, which is almost shot!

John Archer's patchbox is based on an original that was posted to this forum a few years ago... go figure. There were actually 2 guns with similar patchboxes. One had a saw-tooth edge that drew a lot of comments. I seem to remember the saw-tooth one also had a back-action lock. I don't have my files with me as a I write this. I'll look it up and post the maker's name in the next few days... unless someone beats me to it.

The guild is now on break until our Christmas social meeting in December. The new membership year will start in January. We always meet the 2nd Saturday of each month January-June. Except one month when they've changed the date for turkey season. As Bill's post states... contact him if you want info. We're always looking for new people.

We have members from Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington... and even one member from Kentucky. We usually have 2 folks from British Columbia at the fair. One was John Archer, the other is Justin Urbantas. We're the best kept secret in the Rocky Mountains! Bozeman is 1 1/2 hours north of Yellowstone park... and right on interstate 90.

The first Saturday in August Bozeman holds it's annual "Sweet Pea" festival. It's not really about sweet peas... it's an art and music festival with 2 competing venues.

If you decide to come for the gunmaker's fair you can make a multi-week vacation out of your trip. Come visit us!

RAT is correct about the box design....I was smitten by the hinge on the original. The inspiration for this rifle was a Tennessee rifle built by Ian Pratt for Art Riser and posted on the blog several years ago. I changed the side plate and the comb extension but otherwise it's a close copy. Ian's gun has a broken wrist repaired with glue and nails and the wrist shows evidence of being wire wrapped while the glue set. I wanted to do the same to this gun but the grain would not cooperate.
