Grease holes
« on: August 26, 2019, 06:08:28 PM »
From what I have read, it appears that grease holes in the stock are a southern thing. Does anyone know of rifles built in PA or MD/northern VA that have grease holes or something similar?

Thank you

I once own a flint Mc??????? (can't remember name) from Winchester VA area that had a grease hole.
I think I have photos somewhere. Sold it to a man that lived in that same area.

McGilvary that's the name of the builder. Rifle was signed.

Back in the 70's I got to know a fellow in Hoskins, Oregon (he turned out to be a distant cousin) who had and original J&S Hawkin rifle that belonged to his ancestor. It had a grease hole in the stock with what looked like tallow in it. I don't know what became of the rifle after he died. He had said that one of the serious Hawkin collectors of the era had contacted him a few times about buying the rifle.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

The fact that we came up with only one rifle in my targeted area shows that they were certainly not common, which is what I wanted to know.

Thanks again.
