Made and installed the catch spring today. It has a hook that anchors in a little mortise at the buttplate edge and then is riveted there. A spike goes up through a hole in the surround just next to the lid edge, and a brass button is soldered to that topside. I like to install the spring with a little preload. The working arm is 0.040” thick which seems right for tension.  I have never seen the catch spring on an original but know it has the hook, the anchoring rivet, “ledge” catch, and spike post for the button b















Now all that’s left is making and installing the catch on the lid. Probably should have done that as an earlier step.

Put in the patchbox catch stud and tuned it. It closes smartly with a nice “snick” sound. It’s the little things.

Wonderful!

The only correction I'd point out is that the spring for the door is actually curled inward like a knuckle; other than that its a masterful re-creation of (in my opinion) the best G.F. Fainot patchbox!

Finished up the engraving. I figure the only way to gain some level of competence is to do it. I intentionally am working on “folksy” projects and hope the whole effect is greater than the sum of the parts. It’s a fun project.

About done with the carving behind the cheekpiece. Some have described this design as a Gordian knot but it’s really an arabesque. Or simply copied off a carpet beater (Acer’s theory)  ;D

Rich..., that looks really good.  It’s difficult to not get a flat spot or two on circles like that, and you’ve got a lot of circles there!  Also, it’s difficult to get nice parallel lines while doing curves / circles.  Lookin’ good!
