What school is this? or is it full-on fantasy?
« on: September 28, 2019, 04:46:09 AM »
Just popped up on FB Flintlock Gun Maker group.  Post by Reeve about "45cal built in 1977 by Jay Reakirt."

13 more over there.

Appears well-made and skilled work, but I'm unfamiliar with the style, if any.  Or is the styled after another country?

I think it's full on fantasy! At least I hope it is!

I’d use “contemporary”. Using “fantasy” irks some creative builders who do fine work inside and outside the Woodbury school so I stopped using that term.

Noted.

But could be confusing with "contemporary" already being used to refer to any post-historic period builds.

Ha! Semantics make or break things for sure based on audience. In the past I used the term "re-stock" in referring to an antique piece and I saw it immediately ruffled feathers. What I meant was the gun was re-stocked some 50 to 70 years after the majority of its components, and it was interpreted that I was suggesting the thing had been remade more in the present period.

Looks like the Japanese Chrysanthemum on the lid.  Freestyle is a good word to use.

Pretty typical 70's high end contemporary gun. This style was very popular through that era.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Reform school? Sad that they used such a nice piece of wood on it.

I appreciate the skill that it took to build it, but to look at it actually gives me physical pain. :o ??? :'(

Well let's hope that particular tree made a few more boards from which elegant reproductions were whittled.

As a freestyle gun then it's really pushing the limits of our focused group, so I'll let this thread go before it gets locked. I don't need any more forum demerits!   :o

I'd say it's not Sunday School and "Freestyle" does fit ;D

I can imagine it being carried by Tim Blake’s character in ‘The Ballad of Buster Scruggs’.

Did ya see the talon triggers on it?

Looking at this gun once more makes me think it was an exercise in fine inletting
and no thought to historical or any other accurate time frame.Whoever this person was
or maybe still is was good at working with cross grained wood and the patch box proves it.

I like it as great example as different skill sets. Not everyone wants a Historical rifle they just want a great looking/shooting rifle (Herb has built some fantastic ones)

Thanks a lot Wade. No, I didn't see the hideous talon triggers, now I have to call 911. I think I'm having the big one. Don't know if I'll be back. Nice knowing you, I think. :-\ :o ::)

Oh yes, I do wish my inletting skills and metal shaping was nearer to this maker's level than their current state.  I'm practicing and getting some better-they say it works like that.
