Dave is that vice mounted to section of well casing attached to  a wheel rim or a large metal plate that you can move where ever you want it or is it bolted down to the floor?. The Hair seems to be attached to the red thingy off the end of the long grey black gizzmo. Could that be a lamp mount that attaches to the shaft of the pipe so you can swing the lamp where you need for the right angle of lighting? Another cool Idea. I have a series of holes drilled along the bench that I can drop my light w magnifier 1/2"shank into to get it over the area I need to look at. I am not sure that makes any sense what so ever.

What are those jaw inserts/ pads ?

The vise is mounted to an old surplus cast iron stand used by the post office for holding the old stamp machines.  It is heavy but can be rolled around the shop.  I think the adjustable for height shaft is a piece of 1 3/8" or 1 1/2" solid round stock turned down on one end to fit the pelican vise.  This setup was originally built for engraving as I could walk around it 360 degrees.  You are correct that an articulating lamp is mounted to a pivoting bar.  I also have a free standing bench with a series of holes drilled into it to position a lamp.

One of the things I adore about this site is the attention to detail the members take scrutinizing everything that is in the background of a photo after you get done looking at the intended object.

Well David, how else are we supposed to learn from the masters and geniuses on here. Closley study whatever they are intending to show us, and then hope they left some secrect tool laying about that then we can ask questions about. Hoping they will share some more knowledge after it was unintentionally shared through an arrant photo shoot.
