Deer, oh deer!
« on: November 09, 2019, 05:02:24 AM »
Dear friend Rich Pierce needed an inlay for a fur trade flinter. He sent a photo of an original cheekpiece to his artistic daughter, who did super nice black and white artwork of the deer. I brought that black and white into my CAD/CAM system, and created a multi level toolpath in aluminum. Then I went over the tool marks with a dremel, blending the surfaces, defining muscles and body mass. The antler tips and plant leaves required some chisel work.

Then I ran the die, sandwiched with .015 brass and a 1/8" thick rubber backer, through my hand cranked rolling mill. Puff-puff, lemme tell you. I'm very pleased with the results, and thought you might like to see something a little different.

The die right out of the milling machine, with all its toolmarks and warts.

Then the product, with the extra metal trimmed off, in brass. The plate is 2 1/2" long.

Finally, in silver and brass:

For a Deringer, perhaps? Nice work.

I think that's correct, Elnathan. I don't know much about his work.

Where are those from, Rich? I haven't been able to find much on Deringer rifles, part from Hanson's and Gale et al's books. Those pictures look like they came from somewhere else.

One from For Trade and Treaty by Gale. Other from a gun that sold at auction. Kept the picture. The rifle I’m building is based on the Deringer in the For Trade and Treaty book.

That would make a nice belt buckle as well.

That is really cool Tom, I would have never thought of them being made by a roller.

Tom, that is great work.  I keep coming back to this and looking at that die.  There is no way I would ever have figured out how to do that.  It doesn't look like that would form what you made.  But I can see the proof, do what do I know?
