Trade Guns with round barrels
« on: November 13, 2019, 08:39:31 PM »
Did any original trade guns have round barrels?
Not octagon to round.
Thank you for your information ( if any )

In For Trade and Treaty, there are 2 earlier one pictured with round barrels. The first is on page 25, it is a fowler with a dog lock c. 1697-1716. The second is on page 73, it is a Northwest trade gun c. 1814-1819.

There is another slightly unusual one on page 175 in the same book.

Rich,
That would be an interesting piece for sure.  The script does show up in an of the books I have. Block lettering yes, but not round or even octagon to round with script engraving.

Greetings,

There are a couple of pieces in "Colonial Frontier Guns" by T.M. Hamilton that may, or may not, be of interest.  Figure 67 - "The Davis Gun" - shows a restocked piece using a mix of early parts including a 40.5 inch round "probably French" barrel with a bore of .525 inch.

The other one is Figure 68 - "The Duncan Fowler" - which has a round barrel of .628 bore and length of 47 & 1/16 inches.

Jim, I would like to see pictures of the lock.

I got out the round trade gun barrel I have and was wrong, there is no London engraved on the top of the barrel. It’s sort of a fish. 40.5” long, .58 bore.  Originally flint, now percussion.

Rich,
Are those proof stamps on the left side of the breech? Any idea of approximate age?

Yes, left side. eBay special.  No idea of age or origin.  Could be late as 1930s for all I know!

Rich, I should of mentioned that the Duncan Fowler in the Hamilton book has a fish on top of it.

A common decorative loop found on English made barrels. Many times the maker's location is engraved closer to the breech on top.

Rich,

Thanks for your interest.  Here is a photo of the lock, reconverted from percussion back to flint.

Here are some dimensions of the gun:

English Trade Gun
LOA 52.25   LOP 13.25
Barrel LOA 37.18  Breech 1.22  Muzzle 0.72  Bore 0.56  Marked LONDON plus English proofs
Buttplate  H 4.75  W 1.75
Lockplate  H 1.18  L 6.25
Rear ramrod pipe to middle ramrod pipe  11.25 (this is the length of visible ramrod)
Middle ramrod pipe to front ramrod pipe  7.25  (this is the length of visible ramrod)

The gun was shortened at the muzzle sometime during its useful life and the front RR thimble replaced with a simple copper thimble.

Let me know if you wish more photos.

Jim
