Soldered rear sight?

Howdy all, I have been looking, possibly not very well, to see if a rear sight would have ever been soldered on instead of dovetailed. time period 1750-1780's. I have a type G/carolina gun that does not currently have a rear sight and I would like to add one. I have seen rear sights on them, and see that clay smith has a reproduction rear sight for sale. I was just curious if it is at all documentable to just solder a brass rear sight on similar to what would be done for a front site? I know they had the means just curious if they did it... Thank you.

Round barrel, or octagonal?  Either way, I'd dovetail the barrel 1/32" deep, swage the steel up on either side, and install a dovetailed rear sight.

I whittled out this one, and installed it on the .54 cal rifle barrel that's going into a Chambers' Pennsylvania fowling piece for a friend in the Lower Rainland.  This gun also has a 20 gauge smooth bored barrel...nice combination.  Just finishing up the engraving right now...film at 11.

I had a sloppy dovetail on my first kit gun.  I tinned and soldered the rear sight.  It was a pain when it came to adjusting it.

I fixed a sloppy rear sight for a friend by just tinning the bottom of the sight so when re insttalled the thin layer of solder was enough to make a tighter fit.

The TR gun and the Yuchi gun both had shallow dovetails.  Clay's sight does not have a deep notch and I ended up refiling itand reworking it.  Rifle Shoppe sight is better.  I suppose you could file off the dovetal and sweat it on - but I'd have a hard time keeping it in place.

Please hunt up Mike Brooks’s posts on trade gun sights. They are very different than conventional long rifle sights. Normally located right over the front lock bolt or even closer to the breech. On a type G trade gun or Carolina trade gun. Mike has a tutorial or build along posted on the old forum. He and I had a short discussion on them some yeas ago. BJH
