need to find long nipple?
« on: March 14, 2020, 05:37:51 PM »
Anyone know where I can purchase an extra long nipple?  Repairing an original and it is a 1/4 x 28 thread, but the shank that the cap goes on needs to be longer than normal.  Wondering what might be available?
Have tried Dixie, TOW and Log Cabin catalogs with no luck
Thanks

Bigmon,

Let me look thru my junk.  How long does the shank need to be?  Are you needing a new/shootable nipple?  Or will a rusty non-shooter work?

Hi and thanks for the response.
Whats in the gun now measures 1/4", the part the cap goes on, not counting the part the wrench goes on above the drum, which is about another 3/16"  Total being then 7/16".
I need the total to be about another 1/8", if such a thing is even possible?
Thanks

Hi Bigmon,

I struck out.  I have one that is a little longer than usual, but the threaded end is bigger than 1/4-28.  I think it may be metric.  Sorry.

Maybe the extension could be on the threaded part?  Make a bushing out of a 1/4x28 nut by removing the flats.

Ive turned out a number of nipples on my little lathe from grade 8 1/4-28 bolts or from scratch with drill rod if u have access to a lathe. Ive made bushing for shot out original nipples as well if the old one was in good enough shape. It could probably be drilled and filed out in a drill press if you had to.  In the old days I just put my electric drill in my vise and went to work with files.  Just a thought. Good luck
