Ticking Source?
« on: February 12, 2020, 04:24:24 AM »
My rifle loves the .015” good tight weave blue stripe pillow’s ticking from Jo-Ann’s.

Running low, I went last night and to my horror, it was all sold out. All they had was the very thin stuff.

Anyone known a good source for REAL ticking that measures about .015”? Thanks all!

Hmm... Right off hand, I can't provide a source for 0.015" pillow ticking.  With apologies, I'll suggest alternatives.

Track of the Wolf has top-quality 0.018" ticking in pre-cut patches, but also in 1-1/2" x 36" strips and in half yard bulk pieces.  This is thicker than you requested, though.

Track also has 0.015" plain cotton in the same configurations:  pre-cut patches, strips, and half-yard sections.  I think the fabric is "pocket drill," which is used for trouser pockets, so you know it is tightly woven and tough.

Personally, I don't think the blue stripes make a difference.  However, I also understand that if you have your mind set on something, nothing else will do.  I'm thataway myself.  Might I suggest getting a half yard of the 0.015" pocket drill from Track and trying it out?  Just to keep you shooting until you find what you want.  One thing about the patches you get from Track is that you can be confident they are all cotton... No polyester to melt and build up in your bore.

You might also check The Gun Works and October Country.  I hear both outfits have good patches, although I have no personal experience with them.

Good luck, hoss!

You might try Walmart.  I have bought ticking there before.

Joanne's and Michael's (hobby/sewing shops) also carry ticking. I've bought it from these places before but I never mic'd it to see how thick it was. Seems like any woven material would only be marginally consistent at best with regard to thickness, particularly down to the thousands of an inch. I think I'll mic a piece of it tonight when I get home from work just to see how thick it really is.

Edit - I see you already buy from Joanne's. Maybe you can order it online. I just looked, you can get ticking for $7.31/yard with free delivery. I don't know how thick it is but a couple yards should last a pretty long time.

It is a standard product they carry as I use it in two of my guns. If they aren't going to get it in soon you can order it from them online. Can't cost much to ship a yard or two.

jo an fabric has pocket drill that mic's at .015 compressed.  Take your micromitre or calipers with you for quality control and make sure that it is 100% cotton.

Longknife,

I too live in St. Louis and I find great variety in fabric at Joann's.  You may have to go to a couple of different aisles to find what you want.  Drill Cloth is in the utility cloth section.  Ticking is in another aisle.  Then there is denim and canvas.  I have enen found 100% flax linen.  I do wish the weave was a bit tighter, but the linen is there too.

We used to have a Hobby Lobby store and they had fabrics.  I recall they had Onasburg so I bet they had ticking.

Good to know! Sounds ideal. I'll hunt for some locally tonight at the various shops around town, and will report back. Thanks for the suggestions, all!
