New Horn for the birds
« on: February 12, 2020, 01:05:01 AM »
Shown here is a horn I just finished.   I am doing more scrimshawed horns right now.   This is my latest effort covered with a couple of birds and some flowers.   There is what is supposed to be a Carolina parakeet and a Northern Cardinal.   I think I put a little too much color on them.   I need to use less color and more detail.   I will see what I can do on the next one.

The right hand horn is 14" around the outside curve and 11.5" tip to tip, not including the stopper.  The cherry base plug is 2.29" in diameter.  The tip is horn and antler.  The stopper is walnut.

The horn was colored with a little ferric nitrate prior to starting the engraving.  The ink was Windsor & Newton drawing ink.  I finished up with some Tried and True oil on the wood and horn followed by a coat of wax.  I should have scraped better on the top of the horn at the base, but I didn't see that until I put ink on it.

"Top Shelf" work all around Mark. You have raised the "Bar" high in many categorizers.

Beautiful work, Mark. I like everything about the horn and the decoration. Gorgeous scrimshaw work!

Thanks guys, for all the positive feedback.  I was expecting some pushback for not being fully traditional.  I think I am going to give the color a rest for a while.

Mark, there are a lot of us who "Push the Envelope", I for one like your "Outside The Box" thinking. It shows imagination, design development and artistic ability. I'd let it run, look at your Hunting Pouch with embroidered fraktur insert, really cool, I'll bet that didn't last long. Look forward to seeing what's next.
