I finally made myself a smooth bore to replace my Fusil Fin. That French gun has been kicking my cheek bone for the last 20 years.
The new gun has a Curly Gostomskie barrel, an L&R Durs Egg lock. It is .62 caliber.
I finally got to shoot it on Saturday. I was using a .600 ball on top of 90 grains of 2f Goex, with ,018 pocket drill, lubed with bear oil.
Target on left is 25 yards one on right is 50 yards. I had one cutting the edge of the paper at 50. I jumped a little when the .308 two benches to my right opened up. All shots were offhand.
90 grains of 2f on the French gun would have left me with a mouse under my right eye. I am really pleased,

That is a fine looking gun you built. Good shooting too.

I tried paper cartridges. Tightened up the group in my 20 bore over patched balls. I wouldn't have believed it if i hadn't done it. Good luck with your new smoothie.....did I mention nice gun 😉

Really nice work Alacran. The stock design is far superior to the Tulle trade musket, and I can see how it would be comfortable to shoot. Excellent off-hand work too.

Very nice work. However, why do you shoot such a large power charge. Are you hunting big game. I shoot with the North-South Skirmish Association and most people started shooting their 69 caliber smooth bore muskets with 70 to 80 grains of FFG powder with an unpatched ball. We shoot at breakable targets at 25 and 50 yards and people soon realized that the guns shot just as well at those ranges with 40 to 45 grains of FFFG powder. Easy on the shoulder. I found that to be true also shooting paper targets with my 20 gauge flint fowler with no loss of accuracy. You might give it a try.

I've been unable to get on the internet, since I posted this thread. Have a new Jetpack and all is well with the world again.
First let me thank every one for the kind words.
Richs, The reason I was shooting 90 grains, was to see what the recoil would be like. On my old fusil I went to shooting bare ball, only because I couldn't find thin patching that was also strong. Did not want to go and buy a special mold of .580. The old fusil measured .615 at the muzzle. This one measures .628. As far as hunting goes I will probably hunt deer when I'm back East with it. If I'm fortunate enough to get drawn for elk again this year, I will use this new gun. That is if I can get it to shoot groups at 100 yards. I expect I will be shooting between 110 to 130 grains of 2f.

I had a smooth 12 bore ctg. gun that shot into 10" at 100 yards with round balls, but it took 7 drams of powder to do it.
That's a LOT! Your respective loads listed appear to be 'in the range' of possibilities, for shooting to that distance, if it will.

The barrel is 41 and 1//2 inches long. Plan to shoot the smooth bore matches with it at the AZWINS shoot at Phoenix next week.

I like that fine gun. You did great craftsmanship with that build. My .62 smoothbore shoots 3" 3 shot groups at 50 yards. The gun can do that; I can't.

I would suggest testing to be: from an elbow rest or resting against a tree, all shots need to be on a pie plate sized target
to be the outside limit for hunting, whether using a rifle or smoothbore. I expect that would be about 9" to 10" in dia.
