Fish horn
« on: March 05, 2020, 07:53:46 AM »
Here's another powder horn in my collection. I can tell you two things about the man who owned it; he loved fish, and he loved potted plants. I found this to have some interesting decoration, having a faceted neck which has fish engraved I to it along with a potted plant. The body has still more fish, a larger plant and a windmill. The plug is unknown to me, as it is covered with a horn plate. I suspect this was primarily decorative, because I cannot find any means of suspension, and the flanges seem far to shallow for use. Even so, I found it to be an interesting one.

I find the fish to be most appealing.

Most appealing indeed.

It's beautiful! Do you know when it was made?

Have a look at this horn:  http://www.damonmills.com/PS%20Pages/PS%2031/powder_horn.htm

Different (and much more skilled) hand at the engraving, but very similar architecture and a nautical theme. Oddball arrangement for the strap, also....I wouldn't take the NC attribution all that seriously, and I think it is much more likely to be 19th century than 18th, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if both yours and this were both made in the same area.

Bull,
Unfortunately, I have no idea where it came from, originally. I purchased it from a dealer based out of Texas who was "selling it for a friend."

Elnathan,
That is a beautiful horn, and I am shocked at the similarities! I wish there was a more reliable attribution of location. The windmill on mine put me in the mind of the Dutch, and so I started wondering if it wasn't from an area with a heavy Dutch population.

Absolutely fascinating, the similarities between the two, the commentary and all. I'm starting to really like this forum!  ;)
