Good question.  The walls of some horns have been scraped thin enough to enable the user to see light through them and the amount of powder remaining in the horn.  One of the lessons I've learned, is the that wall of the horn IS NOT consistent throughout the horns circumference, even in the same relative section of the horn.  It pays to check the thickness by passing the horn in front of a light (bulb) to check for thin areas, which usually appear as brighter spots against the light in comparison to adjacent areas.  It pays to check often and not to rush the scraping or filing process.  Don't ask me how I know this... :P

Good luck!
