Bluing a barrel

Hello, can anyone tell me how to blue a barrel so it looks like Damascus. I thought I saw it on this forum. I think it was done with Clorox. Any information would be great.

Hi Gary,

The use of faux twist steel is up to you to decide if it is historically appropriate or not.  It looks cool though. 

The way I have heard it is done is by cutting long strips of cloth, twisting them, and soaking them in Clorox.  Wrap around the barrel in a spiral pattern and leave it to etch the steel.  Rub back with steel wool or similar.  Clean thoroughly, then cold blue and rub back. 

I have not done this personally, so take it for what it is worth.  God Bless,  Marc

hello Gary,
I did ones a tomahawk blade this manner.
first I  blued the blade with cold bleu and than rapt the blade with hempcord and I laid it in a bath with hot water with chloor awile.
this was the result

That looks really awesome, but above my ability at this point. The one I saw was blue and other colors I can’t quite remember it’s been a few years. Thanks everyone for the information.
