Sparking Chambers Early Ketland
« on: May 17, 2020, 04:15:20 PM »
Some time back Mike Brooks made a great rifle for me. I named it Jezebel since it is a painted lady. This is a photo of the Chambers Early Ketland lock cycling without  priming iin the pan. Just thought I would post the picture as it shows the sparks a good lock directs into the pan. Had the rifle been loaded and primed I believe it would have gone off in a hurry. Tim

A Late Ketland is lock Don Bruton used in my Gillespie that I'm learning to use.  It seems great, fired the pan with the original flint that has been fired probably 50 times yesterday morning.  Then after 3-4 shots, I got a couple misfires.  Looked at the flint, there was a big V-shaped chip  in the middle.  I thought, what the heck, I'll try to knap it.  Tapped it a few times with the brass rod of my starter, got a decent edge, it started firing well again.

This photo is absolute proof of why I tell people who are looking at getting a flintlock if they can't afford a high quality lock to wait, save their penny's until they can afford one. A finely built, well tuned lock is a work of art. Thank you so much for posting this.

That's a hot one, Tim. If loaded, it might not have needed priming to shoot.

I have used the Chambers early Ketland on a couple of rifles and they were as yours, very good sparkers and smooth operating with great flint life.

This lock and the Chambers R-faced English are my favourite locks.   Best sparkers I've ever had.

I've found both Ketlands from Chambers to be super quick, especially a tuned Early. Catherine's  ;) new lock isn't too shabby either.

Great picture.  Thank you for sharing.
I started off with two Pedersolis and it wasn't long for each became less than reliable.
I now have a couple Late Ketlands and couldn't be more happier.
