Bag #27 - Simple Bag
« on: April 18, 2020, 08:29:02 PM »
I was asked by a good friend to make a plain bag for a project he is doing.  He requested simple, including a button for strap adjustment.  This is a tri-fold cowhide bag with a flush welt and internal divider.  The buttons are horn made by Ron Hess.  It does have the stiffener/strap anchor inside the top back.  Simple it is.  God Bless,   Marc

That looks familiar.   I make a lot of bags of that pattern.   Your work is very neat, as always.

Simple maybe, but extremely well done, as usual!  I’d be interested in seeing what your friend’s project is like, when all the pieces are assembled...

Nice work Marc. I like everything about it. Color, strap attachment, flap shape with the square body. Enjoy seeing your leather work. Jerry

Thank you guys.  I am striving to have one quality, regardless of whether I consider a bag plain or fancy.  I am obviously not going to make money at this hobby!    ;D  God Bless,   Marc

Just what the doctor ordered isn’t it? Plain didn’t mean poorly done. Great bag, Marc.

Very well done.  Simple does not mean easy to pull off that well.

Hi Marc. Just have a question on construction if you don’t mind ? I’m wondering how a divider is sewn in on a folded bag. I see that it may be stitched in on the bottom of the back panel and then up the side seams to a point? This may be called a simple bag but it has some pretty neat refined features on it. Great job !

Hi David,

The divider only goes up roughly half way the height of the bag.  The welt up the sides are made from the same thickness material.  That way when I cut it all flush, sand the edge smooth, bevel the corners, dye it, polish the edge and wax, you don't see the divider or the welt.  It just looks like I used 50% thicker leather than actual.  I did sew down the bottom of the divider to keep it from moving around, but you don't have to.  Before sewing it looks something like this.....

Sorry for the poor drawing.  I think you can get the idea though.

My dad told me this about leather, "The final 10% of the work takes 50% of the time and is 90% of the look."  That's what it feels like.  If you miss architecture, stitching, dye/finishing or edge finishing, the overall look suffers.  I am no expert at crafting things, but I have been around nice leather all my life and know what good looks like.

God Bless,   Marc

Marc, thanks for taking the time to post that. Yes, the drawing clears it up nicely. That’s  sage advice that your Dad provided you along with your thoughts on what was meant by it. Really good stuff and I know it is appreciate here. Thanks again, David.
