Original "Bee Hive" Power Horn?
« on: September 05, 2019, 12:36:35 AM »
I don't collect horns and have to admit that I don't know much about them.  I picked this horn recently and would like to get some opinions from those that know horns. Is this what would be considered a Bee Hive turned plug from the Piedmont area of North Carolina? The horn isn't very big and measures 8-inches along the outside curve. Also, the plug is made from two pieces of leather stitched together. It appears to be quite old and could be original to the horn. Any info would be appreciated.

I'll take a shot at this, the butt looks like it is done in the Bee Hive manner. I'm thinking the lack of Bands and or an applied One or Two piece tip of Antler leaves it out of N.C. The finial is more Acorn shaped, pointed than most of the N.C. horns I have seen, they are flatter. The lip on the tip reminds me of a couple Southwest Va. attributed horns I have seen.
The Leather stopper is a Southern thing, not to say they were not used in other areas (Doubt any horn ever came out of a shop with one) Jim Webb mentions them in his Sketches of Hunting Pouches Powder Horns an Accouterments of Southern Appalachia
Some horns are easier to attribute to an area, for me this is not one of them. Very nice horn and would fit well in any Southern collection.
How big is the hole in the tip? I'm wondering if maybe it was a shot horn.

Thanks For Posting It, Tim C.

Thanks for the response Tim. It could be a shot horn as the hole is 3/8-inch. Haven't considered that to be honest.  Glad to hear that the leather stopper is a southern thing. I was hoping it would be NC, but SW Virginia works for me as well.  Thanks again.
