Another Oops Horn
« on: May 09, 2020, 04:00:11 PM »
In the past I have put patches, rawhide, Pewter, tin, Brass, Copper on horns for show. In the last month or so I have managed to file through the sides of Two horns.
This one is taken from page 341 of Dr. Hopkins book Bone Tipped & Banded Horns, it is identified as a Southwestern Virginia horn. It is about 15 1/2" around the outside curve and 12 1/2 tip-to-tip. The Maple butt is about 2 1/2", held in by Four steel pins. The Two part tip is horn, the collar is held by Two pins and the tip by Eight. The repair is rawhide and is stitched with rawhide.
From the question about rounding the body of a horn; If you look close you will see that the butt is round but the center of the horn is almost oval.

Very cool. I love the lacing vs just stitching on the patch and your tips are great. That’s the ‘calfing bottle’ tip you posted the other day with some others you had just turned I think. Love it.

BTW, your old posts still have busted links on the pics. Sure would be nice to see all those old horns and bags.... ;)

Does the patch make the horn air tight?   Honestly,  if I were to rasp through a horn, I would most likely toss it.

The lacing looks nice but like Mark asked does it make it airtight?

Nice work.I've got three going and it's a game of chicken to see how slim you can get them without going through.I've taken to dropping a flashlight down the butt end and guessing by the amount of light.

I'm not sure there's an actual oops under the patch, but yes, it is traditional and you fill the hole, or cover with laquered paper or whatever and bind in leather and treat the leather and it's completely airtight. I have a few that Jack Duprey did to repair originals and they are as tight as can be.

 If done right it does.

I think I fixed all my "Toutorial" posts. Unfortunately I had a PC crash and lost most of the early Pix that are in "Accouterments". If you have one you want to see PM me the link and I'll see if I can either find it or fix it.

Tim's "oops" produces art.

My "oops" usually produces property damage.

Nice work as always Tim!
