Staining ramrod

Do you stain the ramrod ?

I use the same stain that I use on the stock, but sand it back so that the ramrod is a lighter color than everything else. 1 coat of finish over that.

I always try to stain the hickory rod, but it always seems like I never get the color I’m aiming for.

I candy stripe mine, and soak it in turpentine, and linseed oil, to make it more flexible. Using it will color it. I never put an actual finish on it, because it makes it too slick, and only looks good if you never use it.

I do this to combat slick, as in patch lubed hands. The cuts are made with a tri-corner file, they are cut with the angle down so you have a sharp edge to pull against. I cut the lower one to mark a load properly seated in the barrel.
