Filing the bump of the entry pipe
« on: May 13, 2020, 09:00:28 PM »
Does anyone have any tricks or techniques for filing the details on the "bump" of a fowler entry pipe? For example, I've used Curtis' metal wire technique in filing flats and grooves in octagon rifle pipes, but that won't work for the bump on an entry pipe. Any suggestions other than start with a good file and proceed with care?

Cheers, Alex

Some of the "bumps" are formed from the inside out. If its much of a bump that could be the case...LP

Not talking about the bump itself - I know that is usually formed from the inside - but rather the filework details.

I use a small three cornered file with one safe edge for most of my detail work in that area.  You might be able to use a jeweler's saw to establish some of the lines and then move to a file, depending on what you are doing.  You should post a photo with the design marked on the "bump" area with a sharpie or other marker, it may give us better ideas for suggestions.

I'll dig around and try to post a photo of what I mean. Cheers, Alex
