custom rifling/ barrel pattern who can deliver?
« on: August 06, 2009, 06:28:33 AM »
ok i am looking into what i want for my next build, and i have some ideas i want basically an entirely custom barrel, from length to profile and rifling, who can produce what im looking for? i will be a relatively short barrel but i am looking for something in 62-65 caliber, with a custom rifle job and a heavy breech, done have all the specifics yet on the profile, just starting to put it together in my head and i want to know what is available, but i do know what i want in rifling if it is available from anyone here is a diagram based off of an original barrel (i am not sure how many lands and grooves there were two sets of 7 or 8 would be fine just the pattern is what im looking for, and i checked very thoroughly it was rifled like this the full length this pattern was NOT just muzzle treatment)

the barrel was off of a jeager, if you couldnt tell ;D

Zack,
Some one can correct me if I am wrong but you will need to convince your barrel maker that he make the cutter to the specs of the barrel. You may have trouble finding some one to do all that work for just one barrel. I have had customers that have made out of the ordinary requests for their projects and I have had to wait up to a year and a half to get the  barrels for their projects. They were only non standard out side profiles, not special rifling. Obviously the barrel makers would be fully capable of doing it but you would have to step up to pay the extra for tooling up to do the job and prepare to wait a few years for them to get around to doing the job.

I'd just about bet that the 'fancy' rifling is merely filing at the muzzle, not going below about 3/8" to 1/2" down the bore.  This sort of filing was common on German rifles and some others as well. Also known as a Hiney muzzle.
Re-read your post, Zack - all the way, huh.  Interesting - but an expensive proposition to be made, I'll bet.

I have one of John Getz's double rifled barrels- sort of a microgroove job.  Got to get it stocked up and shoot it.

They did all kinds of wierd things like this.  Tiny grooves, V grooves, alternating grooves, etc.  I doubt that most of them worked very well.  Hard for the patch to cram itself into those tiny grooves.  I have photos of an early 19th century German rifle with "Haar-nadel" rifling.  Something like 33 narrow, deep, square grooves.  I can't imagine that it would hold a patch well, but this particular gun probably wasn't shot much anyway.

Most of them had perfectly normal round or square grooves.

Yup it was definitely all the way down, it was actually one of the guns shown at this years 18th century artisans fair in Lewisburg, PA pretty neat (wish i had taken pictures, i am so bad at remembering to take pictures), dropped on of those little mag lights down in and looked at it, i just like things that are different, even if not necessarily the best, if i wanted the best performance out of a gun ... we wont go there  :o

I think you just nailed it.

If I was still making barrels I would say NO, don't want to do it.  All a project like this does to a barrel maker is, it keeps
him tied up so that he can't make barrels.  ..........Don

Now, a "V" groove might be OK, if it was wide enough to be effective at gripping the patch.  I think I have a photo of a brass barreled late 17th century rifle with V grooves on line...give me a minute...

Hopefully you can see them.  These grooves might work OK.  The stubby little Dutch-looking rifle has normal square grooves.

well my quick and dirty little diagram may be a bit misleading in the "v" groove area, if i recall the "v" grooves were actually at a much more obtuse angle close to if not exactly a 90 degree angle... might make a better patch grip and easier to clean than what i had drawn

The problem with getting such a thing done is time. A barrel maker can spend a lot of time just making the cutters for a one off barrel. Then it takes at least 2 twice as long to rifle. So you pay full cost of the tooling and the time to rifle is double.  Very justified high priced barrel.
