« on: August 08, 2009, 08:32:41 PM »
Hello gents, i have a quick question. I just finished rusting my barrel and was wondering what oil i should use on it? Will the regular gun oil i use on my other firearms work? or do i need something special?
thank you

Depending what you used to rust your barrel with the reaction should be neutralized with baking soda. I use abaking soda mixed with water to a paste consisty and rub all over the brown parts. Rinse it off with water. I then warm the barrel with a tourch and apply linseed oil. wipr of linseed oil and coat with WD 40. That should stopp the rusting process and make the barrel a nice deep brown color. Ed

When I used to brown barrels, I would rub it down daily with WD40 until it stopped rusting.   Then I would apply wax.

As has been said, you need to neutralize, or it will keep rusting thru the finish.  Either ammonia, ot baking soda in a paste will work.  Make sure to buy a fresh box, the one that's been in the fridge or the cupboard for a year, won't have enough umph to do the job.  Don't ask how I know. ::) ::) ::)  I warm the barrel and apply the BLO, as a sealer.

The bottle of true brown said to: brush with steel wool, wash with soapy water, and oil. Do i need to neutralize it anyway?

Drake, you can follow the instructions, and if it starts to keep rusting I would then neutralize.  If you are just gonna wash, do it real well.  I've switched to the ammonia, as it works better, and I've not had a problem with it.

A lot of knifemakers use trisodium phosphate to neutralize the ferric chloride used to etch damascus blades.  You can get TSP at Home Depot in the paint aisle.
