New flintlocks being built
« on: May 21, 2020, 04:11:23 AM »
Good evening all. It is great to see several new flintlocks being made by our members.
The one style lock that seems to be missing ,as far as I know, is a late  flint Golcher style that shows up on original SMR's, the one with the round tail.
I have a converted antique Golcher round tail and would LOVE to be able to get a new made one in flint.
Wouldn't have to grind tail of lock to get it.
Not that I am becoming lazy{er than I am} just would be good to have.
I would imagine some existing offerings could be used, internals on a new, correct plate.
Just the thoughts of an ol man on a very rainy night in Charleston.
keep warm,safe,and dry my friends. Dave F 8) 8)

I'm with u.  I was thinking the same thing for a while now but I'm a lefty and it's even slimmer.  On another thread, someone mentioned Chris Hirsch so I looked and he has the parts for a left hand golcher flint.  It has to be assembled, though, and I have no experience with assembling locks nor the equipment so I'd need to find someone to do it.  There was a small right hand round tail on his site as well.  May be worth a look for you.  The golcher looks like the ones you see on SMRs and Gillespie's.  A gillespie is what I'm building next.  Hope this helps you some.

Agree this is desirable. Not sure of demand. All we have now is L&R Manton or Late English.

I'd like to see a late English lock with

*Round tail... although you can always reshape

*Flat plate... you can always file a decorative bevel on a flat plate, but you can't take the bevel off if it's made that way

*"V" shaped waterproof pan... the style where the pan, fence, and frizzen bridal are attached to the plate, but not to each other

*Appropriate 1820's-1830's bridal style... 2 or 3 screw, but but a very simple curved design without piercings or extra decoration. Something more appropriate for American style work (export quality).

*Link connecting the main spring and tumbler.

*Double-throated cock... I'm not a huge fan of the style, but it can be an option. I believe there is only one other company currently offering this style option.

RAT,You just described a variant I made from time to time using the L&R small Manton.
I don't plan to revive it but it's easy to do.What is "export quality'?

While not "my period", there's so many people making guns from this era, I have always thought that there was a real need for a modern made version of the common hardware store locks from the early to mid 19th century.  Plain frizzens, plain little round pans, no fancy schmanzy waterproof this, or V shaped that  .... the ones with all the horrible squiggly line engraving on them...

At least the squiggly lines on this one don't look too bad.

Yes, I do have the drum and nipple.... somewhere...

When a reenactor says "They didn't write everything down"   what that really means is: "I'm too lazy to look for documentation."
