Nosed Gouges
« on: July 13, 2020, 07:15:42 PM »
Having recently re-watched Wallace Gussler's Carving Vid, I was reminded of the usefulness of Nosed Gouges for Stabbing in.

I have a few gouges that I'd like to reconfigure to a nosed profile, but which are the most useful sizes and sweeps for most general work?

I'm thinking; 3 or 4mm (or 5mm?)/3 sweep and a 3 or 4mm (or 5mm?)/5 sweep

Any others to consider? ( I have flat chisels covered)

I have few nosed gouges, but I find I can do most of the same work with a small flat chisel - 1/16" wide at best. I make mine out of needle files and small screw drivers.

'Nosed' is a rounded or curved profile of the cutting edge, as opposed to being flat or straight across - AKA "Bullnose" Gouge or Chisel

Oh! Thank you. Almost all my gouges I've sharpened as 'nosed gouges'  ;D

I didn't know either.  I usually sharpen my gouges straight across, but I have some sweeps that are sharpened with a radius.  They provide more options for the cut than a straight across chisel.

I frequently use "nosed straight chisels" (I just always called then rounded chisels) for a technique I call "roll stabbing".  Here is an example of them in use:

Where can I get a copy of the video ??? Looks like some of my leather tooling designes might be adapted to carving.

Curtis,
How wide is that flat round nosed chisel that you use for roll stabbing? Some best sizes people have found useful would help the rest of us pick a few to round the corners on and experiment with. Thanks!

Elkhorne, I think the large one in the photo is 1/2".  I ground several of different sizes, from 1/16" to 3/4", some single bevel and some double bevel.

Curtis,

I am no where near the caliber of craftsman that you are but I made a couple of chisels like that decades ago, some out of tool stock that I picked up at Dixon's, some made from either cut nails or saber-saw blades.  And they are great for rolling along a curve.  If I elect to stab-in part of the carving I generally start with a fairly narrow rounded profile chisel to make the initial line and then follow with a curved gouge with a rounded edge to smooth out the line.  That's probably why your carving is better than mine.

Best Regards,

JMC
