H. J. Wood Percussion Longrifle - Dated 1963
« on: June 19, 2020, 05:06:10 PM »
I recently acquired this rifle from an estate.  Any info from the previous owner is gone forever.  I do know there was another custom rifle from the same estate marked J. B. Wood.  The markings were very similar.

The lock appears to be an original M. M. Maslin, possibly converted from flintlock.  The barrel is 42” long and 1” across the flats, so it’s a bit muzzle heavy! :)

Thoughts?  Any info on the maker?

Welcome to the forum, NRAchad.  That's quite an interesting rifle you have there - really nice wood.
1" you say - .40 cal?

Thanks!  It’s a .45 caliber.  I checked it on a scale and it weighs in at 11 pounds!

Just an update...

It’s actually a .43 caliber.  The same estate turned up a set of moulds, about 800 .429 round balls and a note saying to use .018” bed ticking, 55 grains of FFF and a No. 12 cap.

I was told that H. J. Wood lived in Northville Michigan, was well known locally and rifled the barrels himself. I haven’t been able to find out anything else.  It’s a shot in the dark, but I’m hoping someone here has a little more info on the maker.

Wide grooves and narrow lands. I bet it loads easily. What do you estimate the twist is?

That name is  sorta/kinda familiar to me and I think I made a lock
for Mr.Wood in years now long gone.I have no records from that
time frame anymore
