Another SMR
« on: June 14, 2020, 03:12:10 AM »
Just finished this. It has a 38" 40 cal OTR Rice barrel. Rice's Nock lock and Rice double set triggers. Came in at a trim 6.5 lbs.
It is actually darker than the pictures show. They were taken in bright sunshine. Made it look redder than it is. I stained it with Kibler's ferric nitrate then added a couple coats of LMF Nut Brown over it. Finish is Chamber's Oil rubbed back with rottenstone.
I put a little carving and some mouldings on it just to gussy it up a bit.
All hardware is rust blued.

Steve

I like it  a nice mixture of styles. It is fine to make replications of what has all ready been made. It is not easy to create your own signature style. You did a good job.

Thanks for the nice comments guys. You're right Jeff, this was inspired by a Cox rifle.

Hi Steve,
I admire your .40 cal, and your choice of lockplates.  Some of the Southern lockplates seem to lack any imagination, style wise, in complementing the lock. But I guess the functional simplicity of a washer or the more typical small bar with the half round is likeable, to those who don't care for ornateness.  Yours strikes a nice balance. I'm a little "safe", as a new builder, but am weighing my choices. Have you seen the "winged bird" design on any originals?  I see the Muzzleloaders Supply carries a similar one.  I would just like to hear your thoughts, as I'm getting educated. Thanks

RMann,
I personally haven't seen the winged design on an original. But then again I haven't seen that many originals. I just liked the look of it and thought it would work with this rifle. I almost put a little silver wire to join the 2 side plates together but decided against it. I did get the plates from MBS.

Thanks Steve, It is fun for me to think and plan around my .40 cal barrel, and in many ways you have hit my ideals with your rifle. And what a nice, graceful TG that matches the grace of her light lines.  Mine will be a little more rustic I expect, in keeping with my limitations, but yours gives me a great example to follow. Any suggestions of how I can see some of Cox's work?  You mentioned his influence, and I'm not that adept at searching, computer wise.

You can see some of Mike's work in Robert Weil's book Contemporary Makers of Muzzle Loading Firearms. I have a friend who has a very nice Virginia style rifle that Cox made for him many years ago. I've been lucky enough to handle it and even did a stock repair on it.

Steve,
Yesterday I coincidentally followed a thread which posted photos from a book on NC long rifles that used the "Bird" style side plate.  Sorry, I can't remember the thread.... But one example was a  Thaddeus Gardner gun, of the Jamestown School, and a simpler styled gun built by Robert Polk of the Early Deep River School. The photos were listed as #58 and #50 respectively.  Then this AM I found 2 more examples, slightly less stylized, of "your" plate, in this site's archives. I looked under NC, and there is one gun by Thaddeus Gardner (Topic=5545.0, and one under the heading of "William Lamb and Son".  (Topic=23024.0)  But that gun is apparently miss-labeled, as it is signed "TG & WL.  William Lamb was Thaddeus Gardner's nephew and apprentice, and they continued to work together for a time.  Sorry I am so limited in sending links... but I thought you would be interested in seeing historical examples of the "bird" plate that MS lists as "contemporary" in their online catalogue.

I LOVE the carving associated with the patchbox.  Very well done, subtle, but elegant.  Just how I like it.
