NWTF Auction Knife
« on: August 16, 2020, 05:32:41 PM »
I was asked to donated a knife to the NWTF auction a couple of weeks ago.  I decided to make a knife from a turkey femur for the winning bidder.  It will be a small neck knife as turkey bird bones are thin. Even though it is 95 degrees here in Aiken, I got a start forging TWO Turkey Bone knives one for NWTF auction and one because I had boiled out both femur & tibia leg bones. Both knives are about 8 inches OAL.  This is a first for me working with bird bones 🙂
Top Turkey Tibia Bone...
Very straight small diameter bone but feels good in hand.
Bottom Turkey Femur Bone...
Also feels good on hand with more traditional curve but It had an unusual twist and elliptical opening making it hard to orient the blade to the handle.  I had to forge the spike tang smaller to get it right.  You'll notice the space between the bone & handle this is for a poured pewter bolster to lock the blade in place...tippit

Top...Turkey Tibia
Bottom...Turkey Femur

Turkey Tibia Bone knife tea stained & finished

NWTF Auction Knife finished with Pewter Bolster.  I'll let the winning bidder decide if he wants it bright or stained.

Very nicely done!  Will both be auctioned at the NWTF site?

The auction has already happened.  The bottom femur knife was sold at NWTF auction..  The straight tibia bone was just a practice knife for me to see if it would work with bird bones.
