What Kind of Wood?

What kind of wood is this?  It is an antique rifle, but figured you builders would have more knowledge of wood.  If you click on pic, you get a larger image.  As you move to the right those lines in wood get very tight and almost look like fingerprints, all the way to end of muzzle.

I’ve seen plain maple cut in a certain way look like that. If it was beech that pattern would be about everywhere.

There not much to look at in that picture.  If I had to make a guess I would say Maple.

 Don’t know which Birch, or Beech, was used a lot by CVA on their Cheap two piece stock Kentuckys, and they had this type of grain quite often.

Doesn't look like most beech I've dealt with - this looks better.  Probably maple but I think possibly cherry - or even elm.

I’ve changed my mind to cherry. Here’s a cherry stock I’m working.

I’m going with quarter sawn plain maple.  That looks like the ray flake exposed to me.

I’m a vote on the Cherry side. You may find an inconspicuous spot along the barrel or ramrod channel to check the hardness with your finger nail. If you can mark it with just average pressure, it’s probably Cherry. Harder to Mark, it’s likely hard maple. Less dense red maple can mimic the hardness (or softness) of Cherry sometimes.  Looks like it has some marks on it already.  And a wallowed out pin hole.  So I’m voting for cherry.

It might be Cherry , the  gun  came from  New New England , but the gun does not really look New England.
