 My guess as to why he disappeared in 1860, is that he joined the army. Northern records are pretty good, but many Southern records are sketchy at best. Some gunsmiths weren’t in the army, but work at one of the arsenals and wouldn’t show up on army rolls.

I can't speak to anything relative to this particular man but that's a wonderful rifle that looks to be in great condition.  Great piece of maple, too.

Nice rifle. I was doing some census snooping for another ALR member, so I spent a bit of time on your "Philip H. Schantz". No guarantee, but I THINK this may be your guy. Born in Darmstadt Germany 12 March 1817  (1880 census). Came to America in 1828 ( 1900 census). Lived in Stark County, Ohio in the 1840's where he and wife Anna had a son John. Before 1880 he moved with the family to Woodland, Barry County, Michigan where they were farmers. Died in 1909 . The  attached  info may not be too legible. Somebody else can chase the period when he was in Ohio and when he, like so many other part-time gun makers in that period, gave up on guns and went to farming.

Neither Philip nor his son served in the Civil War.

That is likely some kin of theirs.
