Newbie

Hi! My name is Rich and I've just joined. I am a long time lurker. I'm not currently building, but I am fascinated by the process.

Back in the 70s, I wanted a Hawken rifle and no one made one, so I got a set of those Sam Hawken blueprints and a Green River barrel and set out to make one. I inlet the barrel and made a lot of the small parts. After that it started going down hill fast. I didn't know anyone to help me and frankly, I was too much of a perfectionist. Now, I wish I could start in again, but it's too late in life to begin another hobby.

I've done a lot of other wood working, making clock cases and a spinning wheel and a dulcimore. I'm just astounded by the level of skill and artistry on these pages.

Welcome.  Don't know your age but it is never too late to start a new hobby and this one is especially great as when you are done you get to go out and shoot it with the pride of knowing you made it.   8)

Rich,
Never too late to start! I started at 49. Got my pop hooked on building and shooting traditional long rifles when he was 72! He’s already planning his third build at 75.

If you can make clock cases and dulcimers, you have the skills. The folks here are excellent guides. The philosophy I attempt to embrace is to ask myself “if I were on my deathbed, which would I regret more? Having tried and not succeeded or having never tried?”

In any case, welcome from another newb. Enjoy the journey!

Paul
