Question regarding TOW barrels
« on: September 24, 2020, 04:30:53 PM »
My apologies if I put this in the wrong place.  This is my first time asking a question to the group.  I am interested in a gun that is for sale.  The builder told me that it had a Track of the Wolf barrel that came from one of their kits.  This barrel was separated from the kit which is unknown.  The builder's best guess but isn't 100% sure is the barrel is a Green Mountain.  TOW's site doesn't say specifically who makes their barrels other than they are made in the USA.  In addition, what has been everyone's experience with Track of the Wolf's barrels?  Pros and cons are appreciated.  Thank you for your time.

track has used a number of different barrel of the years.  is this a straight  or swamped or oct round smoothbore?   green mountain was very used.  as well as colerain.    you can tell a green mountain by the muzzle profile   post a picture   should or could be stamped on the bottom flat

No pictures yet. I will see it in person soon.  I'm pretty sure it is a straight barrel.

OP:  by straight barrel, I'm sure you mean parallel barrel....one would hope that all barrels are straight.  Whenever I've purchased barrels from TOW, I have been assured as to the maker.  I do not know if TOW has a brand of their own.  I will say though, that I"ve never had a poor shooting barrel from TOW.

I will second D. Taylor's opinion regarding barrels from Track. I've gotten several different manufacturers barrels over the years and never been disappointed.

Me neither - all of mine have been Green Mountain barrels except for one Goodoien, which gave
particularly easy accuracy with about any load, but - it still had preferences that were lube dependent.

TotW also sells Rice Barrels which are excellent! Your kit is most likely a Green Mountain, but whatever, it should have a makers name on the bottom flat.
If it is a Colerane barrel please check the fit of the breech plug in the barrel. I have seen some plugs that don't bottom out in the barrel.

Thanks all for the comments.  I get to see it in just a few days in person.  I don't think it is a Colerain due to it having square-bottomed rifling.  There may be some Colerain barrels out there with square-bottom rifling, but I haven't heard of it.  (There's always an exception, it seems in life.)  From what you all have told me, it confirms 99.5% now it is a Green Mountain.  The nice thing is I am able to test it out a few shots.  Also, you have let me know that the TOW house brand is always good quality regardless of who they contracted with at the time.  I appreciate it. If the rifle fits me, it may be adopted.

If it is Green Mountain, count yourself fortunate.   My experience with GM has been all good, and the barrels are usually not fussy about finding a good load.

Bought the gun.  Thanks all who responded.  I'm anxious to try it out.  It's just a simple barn gun in .40 cal.

Well, if it has between 40" and 70" rifling twist, it will likely shoot well. It's up to you to find what it likes.
.390 or .395'[ ball and 10oz. denim and it will shoot with from 45gr. to 75gr. 3F depending on the lube.
The crown should be smooth to enable loading a decent load, as described. The more slippery the lube
the more powder needed, generally speaking.
