Interesting Vise

Some time back I had posted some photos of this vise



A good friend of mine has used it for over 20 years for stockwork but as far as he knew the company he got it from was no longer in business. The other day he sent me this link of basically the same vise for sale. Have a look.

That one's pricey at $425.  This one looks nice but not as flexible and is $135.

Wilton Power Arm 301.
Not cheap and you have to put the vise on it to boot.
I have one that has had 30 years+ of use and is on its second vise.
Takes up a lot less space.
I could not function without it, especially stock shaping.
Works best with a 4" vise.

Your right about it being pricey, but it is a lifetime investment. I spend more than that each month on my truck and how much will that be worth in 10 years?

I have used one of the Wilton Power Arms for many years and like it so well I just ordered another one (just in case).  Glad to know they're still available.

Had seen those Pow-r-arm swivel bases around for years, but never knew they were so pricey,.....or precise!
 Just recently, I stumbled onto  a Pow-r-arm jr. at a flea market and figured for $12 I'd give it try.  It came with a 3" diameter plate for mounting your workpiece, and it was secured to a 2" thick walnut slab  ::). 
The thing locks tighter than a rottweiler on a barn cat [American made!]

This is the one I use for my portable bench, and stocking bench at home. I like this vise because it is versatile, and mounts/dismounts in a blink. All you need is a 5/8 hole thru your bench top. The jaws swivel for any shape, you can make custom jaws if ever you want.

The first big vise has such a swing that I would have to clean my workbench off everytime I wanted to move it around! ;D

The man I apprenticed under had a Kim-Ball-Vise, like the one in the original post. At the time nobody was making them, so I took measurements off of his and built my own from scraps. It has served me well for 10 years and cost me next to nothing to make.

In my little work room downstairs I have a "versa-vise", which works fine for most jobs, but, over at the barrel shop where I do most of my gunwork, I use about a 5" machinist vise, with wood jaws, and mounted on either side is a swing
support arm, covered with leather.   These work extremely well for all aspects of stock shaping or inletting.........Don

Very nice vice. I think if you know how to braze and arc weld find a junk self aligning ball bearing, some steel tubing and some other steel junk a guy could make one for well less than 50 bucks -- I know I could -- If I had room in my shop to put another vice. ;D
