Light aging for new Ivory
« on: October 26, 2020, 10:01:24 PM »
I have a friend that wants to light age some ivory and asked me what is the best thing to use. I told him some things used to stain/age horn/bone but not sure if the same stuff should be used on ivory. I told him I would check with ALR members and see what they had to offer.

Oh before you ask, his is legal, meets all the current restrictions on ivory.

Dennis,

I agree with the tea method.  To see what a "light" aging looks like, I posted this knife I made a few years ago.  The grip is hippo ivory and you can see what it looks like before and after aging in tea.......here is a section of the original post.......

I made this knife a while back and made the grip out of hippopotamus ivory.  It was fairly white when I was shaping the grip.  I soaked it in a little warm water and a couple of tea bags for a day.  This is how it came out........
