my new Haines
« on: October 13, 2020, 04:50:54 PM »
A while ago Smartdog posted pics of a Haines rifle I knew what my next build would be. Dave Keck supplied me with a plank with a barrel channel and a ramrod hole. This was my first from a plank.Used a 54 cweight from rice, chambers siler delux, made the patch box from a kit from MBS. I browned all steel parts, then rubbed them back, love this look.Wood finshed with orange stain, aqufortis, and Chambers oil. This my best rifle thus far, sure you will see mistakes.I thank Smartdog And Mike Brooks. I used his tutorial and found it very helpful. Thanks .

thanks Rich, I praticed some of the carvings 5 or 6 times before I did them on the stock. Wished my pics were better. It took me 3 days to finally get them on the forum, I got to get some computer lessons from my son in law.

That's a rifle to be proud of.  I can even hear it begging to get into the woods for deer.

Good on you John.  That is a very ambitious build for your first plank, and you did very well on it.  The carvings and finish look great.  Did you use the Mike Brooks orange toner, then red-brown stain method he outlines in his tutorial?  I did that on a Marshall rifle a few years back and still like the finish.

Outstanding job, I'm amazed that is your first build and from a blank yet.

For my orange stain I simply mixed some stain my Dad left that he used on violins. It also helped me find scratches too, then aqfortis some sanding and a light coating of LMF nut brown.

The Haines style is my favorite. Its the right shape and length. I have a 58 caliber D weight and I'm building a 45 caliber B weight now. Building from a plank is intimidating the first time but its really the way to go. With kits you are stuck with where inlets are. I like you want the barrel channel and ramrod done by someone else.

You did nice work.
