Identify this old shotgun ?
« on: November 20, 2020, 02:23:28 AM »

Anyone recognize the maker of this grungy old shotgun ? I picked it up at a recent auction in my area. As you can see it is in attic condition with a walnut stock,41-3/4" barrel, brass furniture, and a poorly fitted replacement lock. The only marking on the barrel looks like  .N  . 107. with the first and last period at the center of the N and the number. The middle dot, if it is part of the stamp, is at the top. Simple brass ferrules with one skinny groove at each end. Dirty bore measures .710. Sorry for the poor photos,I waited too long today and lost the sun light Thanks, Roland

new England militia gun would be my guess.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

NE gun, or an English import, probably c.1810. The lock has been replaced and the new lock is quite a bit smaller than the original...It's impossible to tell from the pictures but I'd guess a NE stocked gun but the metal parts are English. The original lock may have been somewhat older...which is why I think it may have been assembled here.
