First scratch build
« on: November 30, 2020, 10:06:05 PM »
Here is my first scratch build.  First a big thank you to Herb for encouragement to start.  He inspired me to get started and his enthusiasm for building was a big motivator.  I am a Hawken fan and this rifle is built from plans I believe are Don Stith's.  I knocked out the rifle in 60 days, then took a hiatus to finish the final shaping, taking maybe 3 months of limited time to do it.  Building the basic gun was fun and fast, but the final stock shaping intimidated me to point of taking a 3 year break until I got past the wall and plunged in to finish.  I followed the blueprints as closely as I could, with some deviations from historically correct features, such as using round bottom rifling.  As important as it was to stay inside the lines, I didn't want to get caught in the details while learning a new set of skills.  In the interim of building I was blessed to examine the Carson Hawken in Santa Fe, Modena's rifle in Glorietta and maybe a dozen other rifles of J&S and Sam handiwork.  Hands on examination is important to anyone attempting to channel the master's work in whatever school inspires you.

Rice barrel, 1-60 twist, six groove round bottom rifling, 36" long, and .50 caliber.  Davis lock and triggers.  The wood came from Tiger Hunt.  Metal parts from Muzzle Loader Builder Supply and Track of the Wolf.  I made the ramrod pipes, the ramrod, and front sight.  The finish is a simple asphaltum artist oil paint with heat bodied linseed oil topcoat from Woodfinishing Enterprises.  I've put maybe 30 rounds through it, but haven't had the time to sit down and work out loads and adjust the sights.  But with "out of the box" sights it hits maybe a foot to the right and that much low at a hundred yards.  What a feeling when the very first shot hit the steel.

Thanks Herb.

Kevin

I’m no Hawken expert, but I know a good looking rifle when I see one.
Nice job!

For a first scratch build, you have done very well.  I'm pleased that you stuck with it and saw the rifle through to completion.  Congratulations - you'll enjoy this rifle for the rest of your life.

Looks good to me.  Most folks think a Hawken rifle is easy to build, but the work in the breech/lock area are much harder to do correct, and cutting the stock for wedges requires more detail work than pins.  The second rifle I built from scratch was a S Hawken and I learned real quick that it is more work than I anticipated.  Hawken rifles are one of the two types of rifles I love to build and shoot.  Good work.

Nice job !    You’ve captured the essence of the Hawken style, which is very distinctive and hard to do right.  I think I’ve built 3 over the years, and I think getting them right is harder than building a longrifle.   Keep up the good work.

I'm a nobody but that rifle is gorgeous to me- the lines are very clean and well executed.
Whose trigger guard is used on this?

Very, very nice. Most of the top builders here didn’t put out a #1 as good as that. Very well done.

Thanks for the compliments.  It was a definite milestone, going from watching and reading to doing the thing.  The trigger guard is Track's Classic English Style.  And yes, I started another.

Just curious, Is the barrel straight or tapered? and is it 1" across the flats or smaller?   :o

The barrel is 1 inch straight.  The hollow rib from MBS is attached with 3 rivets and the nose is filled with lead.  I applied LMF browning but the humidity is too low out here without a sweatbox so I rubbed off what was there and applied Oxpho-Blue a couple of times then rubbed it back with a 3M metal finishing pad to a grey finish.  The other metal parts browned out with the LMF nicely.  I'm not sure I like the combination of finishes on one rifle but maybe a couple of weeks in the out of doors will make that a moot point.  The dirty barrel is after the first trip to the range before cleaning.

Very well done. I have seen 5th builds that weren't even close. The English trigger guard does look a little odd. However it does look practical. Good Job!
